Throughout the semester, I thoroughly enjoyed the many conversations, projects, posts, and ideas that I was able to engage with and partake in. For both of the major projects that I completed this semester, I chose to go with my strengths and write traditional research papers on some of the larger pieces that we covered in class. My favorite project of mine, however, is my first project, an essay on Beowulf utilizing ecocriticism. Before I started this project, I didn’t even know that ecocriticism was its own field in literary criticism. I figured that tons of people had written on the environment as it is presented in a number of pieces, but I had no idea that it was a field that professionals and intellectuals would specialize in.
Not only did this project expose me to new areas of literary criticism, but it allowed me to combine my passions to make meaningful work. I have a deep care for the environment and I also love researching and writing essays utilizing that research. I had a lot of fun working on this, and I found it to be incredibly rewarding and gratifying for my academic passions. I hope that in the future I can continue to create meaningful pieces of writing that utilizes research and combines understandings of texts and major political and social concepts.

I think when you can make a connection from something in class to a passion of yours, then it’s no longer just work but something much more meaningful and you learn something. It’s not easy to make these connections.
I didn’t know that ecocriticism was its own field of literary criticism either before this course and the discussions we had in class about how Beowulf connects to nature. It is great that the environment is something that you’re interested in and that you know your strengths lie in traditional papers because that combination allowed you to create something to the fullest of your potential!
